First Impressions: Buke and Gass – Riposte

It sounds like Belly having a breakdown. A lot of bands do the DIY thing. Buke and Gass make their own instruments.

A “buke” is a self-modified six-string former baritone ukelele. A “gass” is a guitar-bass hybrid. Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez bang the hell out of both and then fill in the blanks with foot percussion and other bits. It’s as noisy as it sounds – and just as fun. It’s also quite pretty.

I first heard Buke and Gass back in May and was hooked in four bars. I must have been distracted by other things, because I didn’t get around to ordering the album until December, and it didn’t arrive through my letterbox until today.
