I was reminded of this superior 80s teen movie yesterday, though I own it on DVD. It was one of my favourite films growing up, and it holds its own admirably despite its age.
Janey Gleen (Sarah Jessica Parker) wants to audition for television show Dance TV, but her strict military father (Ed Lauter) won’t let her. Luckily, her rebellious best friend Lynne (Helen Hunt) has other plans, and soon she’s practising her moves with gorgeous Jeff Malene (Lee Montgomery).
Nasty rival Natalie wants to spoil their plans to win the contest, but Janey, Jeff and their friends (including a young Shannen Doherty) won’t be stopped so easily.
It’s a pretty standard dance movie plot, but Amy Spies’ tight script hits all the right notes and the cast are extremely likeable. Throw in some memorable songs, and you have one of the finest examples of its genre.
