I’d like to thank Everett True for being a bozo. He was looking for Anni Rossi, to blog about her, but typed in Anna Calvi instead. The latter is much more my style, falling somewhere between Siouxsie Sioux and Nina Hagen – and only just the right side of ridiculous.
The song’s originally by Frankie Laine, made famous by Edith Piaf.
Here’s the cover by Elysian Fields, for comparison. Although Jennifer Charles’ voice always makes me feel like I ought to be lying in a bath surrounded by candles and eating a Cadbury’s Flake, I prefer the more visceral treatment by Anna Calvi. They’re both well worth viewing.
