Toni Basil – Mickey: 33% more awesome

I work with someone called Mickey, and I like to sing this around the office to tease him a little bit. He’s sweet enough, though not so fine he blows my mind. It’s just my mischievous, evil little goal to persuade all the girls in the office to sing this at him and see if he blushes. Plus the song is so damn catchy – and someone’s made it even better.

Here’s the original you know and love:

.

.

It was first recorded by British popsters Racey in 1979, and called Kitty by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. Toni Basil’s cheerleading cover got heavy rotation on MTV and became her one-hit wonder, reaching number two in the UK and number one in the US in 1982.

I recall being sent an MP3 of the song slowed down by someone convinced it sounded better at 33RPM, who found herself especially amused by the lyrics “Any way you want to do it / I’ll take it like a man”, which are easier to hear in this considerably less squeaky version.

It looks like part of the song is missing here, but you get the idea. Youtube user reallybigsmurf5 is just playing the 45″ single at 33″ – and, yeah, it’s kinda cool.
