Continuing down the list of acts that appeared at this year’s Great Escape festival – which I didn’t even go to – I found this 1978 gem by Black Devil Disco Club, which is notable for being somewhat ahead of its time.
Apparently it’s an electronic disco music project (that much is evident) by Bernard Fevre, a French musician who also recorded as Milpatte and released synth library music albums.
He basically did bugger-all between the 1978 release of the Disco Club EP (featuring this track, “H” Friend) and its reissue in 2004. Since that was successful, he’s relaunched the band and been releasing albums on the Lo Recordings label, including Circus this year.
This is what he sounds like 33 years later. There’s something of Bowie and perhaps even of Beck in this deeply odd electro groove. I like it.
