I think Day Is Gone was the first song I ever heard by Cardiacs. It was on the cover-mount cassette tape that came free with Lime Lizard magazine.
My first thought was that it was a lot more accessible than I had been expected. You could almost call it normal, if it wasn’t for that weird time signature.
In that sense, it reminds me of Golden Brown by The Stranglers, which I recall was a favourite of my mother’s. I’d agree it’s a great song.
My opinion of the Cardiacs’ normalcy was quickly subverted by a mixtape a friend made me, but as with Is This The Life? and most of Sing To God, they proved that they could write perfect pop tunes when they felt like it – and perfectly insane pop tunes when they didn’t.
