5 “state of the nation” songs

I was inspired by Tamsin Chapman’s blog piece about “political” pop songs and could think of my own list of nifty diatribes with catchy choruses.

Janelle Monae – Sincerely, Jane

A great message wrapped up in a phenomenal song.

KMFDM – Dogma

Probably the best lyrics of any song ever.

Jesus Jones – Right Here Right Now

Ah, happier times! When I was 13, this song perfectly encapsulated the feelings of hope that greeted the post-communist decade.

Dub War – Enemy Maker

You know, I’ve never figured out all the words, but it’s a great song.

Lily Allen – Everything’s Just Wonderful

There’s something heartbreaking about the passive resignation with which Allen accepts her perceived fate, rather than even thinking that she could just opt out of the depressing consumer-obsessed madness.
