When you think of “Gothic music”, you probably have visions of the Sisters of Mercy flouncing around in frilly shirts, white panstick makeup and big hair.
Czech Riot Grrrl band Stillknox’s bassist Hana Blažiková has other ideas. When she’s not backing a singer who presumably has no clue what those lyrics mean, she’s recovering and restoring lost music dating back to the 13th century by piecing together surviving fragments of musical notation with other historical Gothic references.
Blažiková – soprano and Gothic harpist – collaborates with chamber ensembles like Sette Voci, Capella Regia, Collegium Marianum, Quodlibet Jiřího Stivína, Musica Florea, and Collegium 1704. This piece, performed in July in Prague, is really quite beautiful.
Thanks to IHeartNoise for the tip on this one.
