If you’ve ever liked music, there’s a reasonable chance that you have enjoyed the music of Portishead. I certainly did in the 90s, but lost touch with what they were up to some years back. At the end of this month, they’re curating a festival at Astbury Park, NJ. If that’s a little far for you, they’ve handily put together a free-to-download mixtape featuring the acts who’ll perform, including Battles, Factory Floor, Cults, Swans, DD/MM/YYYY, and Manorexia. I’ve only heard the first track so far (Oneida), but this is seriously good music. Here be the blurb:

From September 30 to October 2 2011 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, All Tomorrow’s Parties will present the first I’ll Be Your Mirror USA event, which will be curated by the mercurial Portishead (who headline the Saturday and Sunday) and ATP. Acting as sister events to the world famous ATP Festivals which usually take place in holiday resorts, I’ll Be Your Mirror is a new series of artist curated music, film and art events taking place in cities worldwide.

(You may be thinking at this point, “This blog sure does feature JG Thirlwell a lot”, and indeed he does appear on this compilation/festival billing. Then again, this week alone he’s announced a split 7″ with Teho Teardo, a couple of guest vocal spots on FM Einheit’s new album International Moods, a forthcoming collaboration with DJ Food, and a lecture spot at New York University. That music is, alas, not free, but I picked up the Einheit record a day or two ago at Amazon and it’s well worth hearing.)

Oh yes! The game!

If you’re one of the two or three people left on the planet who’ve never played Portal, this mind-twisting Cube-esque 3D action puzzler is now available to download for free from Steam. Last year it was available for free for one week, though there are no clues this time on whether this is a time-limited offer. Go get it!
