5 reasons why your prediction of a dubstep-screamo hybrid craze might be way off the mark

A commenter on Collapse Board made the remark that the next big thing will probably be some hybrid of dubstep and rock. It’s a fair guess – maybe even a dubstep-screamo hybrid – but the existence of such a merger doesn’t mean that the public will embrace such a sound.

Back at the turn of the century, a number of bands combined heavy rock with breakbeats. Of the lot of them, only Apollo 440 had hit records. While Pitchshifter, Godflesh and Cubanate had a fair amount of press attention, they were still relatively obscure. Radiator and the similar Stimulator (who don’t seem to have any clips on Youtube – but I do know their singer Billy was best mates with Robbie Williams, which I always found odd – especially when Billy would drag Robbie to industrial-rock gigs at which he’d look deeply uncomfortable) were entirely unknown.

Here’s a refresher on the bands in question – or an introduction if you missed them the first time around.

Apollo 440 – Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Dub

Pitchshifter – Genius

Radiator – Whole Inside

Godflesh – I, Me, Mine

Cubanate – Hinterland

So you see: even if it seems like a great and obvious idea, it just might not be what people are wanting to hear at the time.
