30 day song challenge: day 24 – a song that you want to play at your funeral

Kinda obvious.

Ashes to Ashes reached number 1 in the UK in 1980 and was the first single from the Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) album. The pioneering video, at the time the most expensive ever made, was directed by Bowie and David Mallet.

The song resurrects Space Oddity‘s Major Tom character (also roped in on Hallo Spaceboy), and is variously described by Bowie as both an epitaph to the 70s and an 80s nursery rhyme. Musically, Chuck Hammer layered up four guitar synths, each playing opposing chord inversions – though it was always the funk bass that struck me first.

I’ve loved Bowie since I was a toddler, so I can’t really think of a better soundtrack to check out to.

Of course, if I’m really keen, I can have my ashes pressed into a vinyl copy of the song.
