Top 100 singles of all time: 96 – Eddie Floyd – Knock On Wood

You’re probably more familiar with the Amii Stewart version, and that is one of the few examples of a cover version that is the equal of its source.

What I like about Stewart’s version from 1979 is that it takes the song in a different direction. Instead of the languid rhythm and blues of the original, this is an all-out disco stomper, and it works. Floyd’s version, by contrast, is – predictably – more soulful.

Eddie Floyd only reached number 28 on the Hot 100 with the song, which is surprising because in addition to Amii Stewart’s famous version, there have been covers by Otis Redding, Carla Thomas and David Bowie.
