It’s that time of year again where we reflect on the best of the year’s new music. Here’s some of my favourite songs of the year, with download purchase links for the songs you’d like to keep.
SIDE ONE
DJ Food feat JG Thirlwell – Prey
“The music is broadly electronic: call it breakbeat; call it big beat, though it doesn’t have the dated sound such labels might suggest.”
.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor – Heartbreak Make Me A Dancer
“Stands proudly alongside Madonna’s Ray Of Light and Gaga’s Monster”
.
dEUS – Dark Sets In
“The overall effect is roughly what would happen if Sufjan Stevens at his loopiest produced a Foo Fighters album”
.
Foetus – Here Comes The Rain
“As his sixth genuinely outstanding (as opposed to merely excellent) album, HIDE places Foetus in the same rank musically as the all-time, stadium-filling giants of rock.” (Note: I’d have liked to have included something from Dinoflagellate Blooms, but there weren’t any clips on Youtube. Even though HIDE came out in 2010, this video was from 2011, hence its inclusion.)
.
Oh Land – White Nights
“There are hints of Kate Bush, Björk and Bat for Lashes in her earthy quirkiness, yet her songs are glossy enough to appeal to fans of Katy Perry and Kylie” – The Sunday Times
