I have to quote this review of The Muppet Christmas Carol from this week’s TV Choice because it made me laugh out loud – and I agree with every word!
The definitive version of Dickens’ topical fable features a top-knotch cast, including Hollywood golden couple Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. Michael Caine, in one of his finest performances, provides sterling support as Scrooge, while there’s a wealth of muppet talent down the cast list, with the likes of Fozzie Bear, Rizzo The Rat and Dr Bunsen Honeydew adding colour and depth to this timeless tale.
What I love most about the muppet version is that it manages to be a reverent and faithful interpretation while adding layer upon layer of anachronistic wit and charm to proceedings. Gonzo narrates the story, “aided” by Rizzo, while the mostly-word-for-word adaptation plays out around him. An able human cast including the reliable Steven Mackintosh backs up the manic puppets, though Bean Bunny and the singing fruit steal the show.
It really is the best version yet.
