How Kim Kardashian’s tits prove Obama’s anti-feminist agenda

Well, that got your attention. That’s the trouble, see, it’s the only thing that does. It’s funny, when I think of the people who were most talked about at school, one was a girl who was extremely popular because she just agreed with what everybody else said, and the other was a boy who was so naughty that he was always in trouble. That’s how you get people’s attention – be bland or be shocking. If you don’t, you’re just invisible.

That’s the other thing – most people don’t set out to get attention all the time, and there’s something rather wrong with you if you do. For most of us, we just do what we do because we love it, and if other people enjoy it too, it’s great. That’s all well and good, but when it feels like nobody’s listening at all, you do wonder why you bother. Why not be the bland one or the shocking one for a little while and bask in the rays of that glorious attention?

And that’s how the world ends up like that, with everyone competing for that little bit of sunshine. You chase your own tail trying to get that bit of approval, and for what? To lose sight of the reasons for doing something in the first place?

I made a decision yesterday not to click on a link. It was headlined something about how this shocking photo of a suicide bomber won some prize or other. It was so tempting just to see, but why? Not to educate or inform, but to shock and titillate. That’s how vile and gross we’ve become, looking to the blood of our fellow human beings for entertainment. We don’t need that. There are plenty of people trying to entertain us every day by using their minds and talents and they are being overlooked because we want to look at gore instead.

Someone once asked my colleague what we do for a living, and she said, “We are the swan’s feet. We’re the ones peddling furiously unseen beneath the water so that the swan can glide smoothly past.” It’s gratifying being swan’s feet, when you see how beautiful the whole machine is, but it’s too easy to be bitter and resentful when the only thing people ever notice is the white feathers above.

That’s the hardest part – a lot of the time, it isn’t just the bland or the shocking who get the attention, but those who really deserve it. The bright stars with the talent, and they do merit the attention that is lavished upon them. It’s just that it would be nice if sometimes someone thought about those little feet beneath the water, because even those star players need the rest of us to get by. Every football team needs a mid-fielder; every TV show needs a key grip; every company needs that person who picks up the phone and says, “I’ll put you through.”

Every company also needs the eccentric who comes up with the wild ideas that nobody else would ever think of. They might be regarded with curious looks by the water cooler, but that company would not be there if it wasn’t for them.

It’s not that you might suck at being the striker, the executive or the actor, but that the world needs people not to be stars to keep the whole machine moving. It can be tempting to think, “Why bother? Nobody notices me anyway,” and to give up or to not do your best, or to chase your own tail trying to compete when a lot of the time that star is talented, sure, but what they mostly do is provide exactly what is sought after at that particular moment and that part is down to luck and timing. You being the best at being you is down to your determination.

So don’t change. Don’t pander. Don’t try to be more popular, or more shocking, or more bland, or to jump on the bandwagon. When you’re feeling invisible, don’t think for a moment that you’re not important, even if you’re not held up as the shining beacon. If you’re the eccentric, don’t think for a moment that you’re not as needed as the crowd-pleaser.

We can acknowledge each other, and make each other feel appreciated. When you go to the office, give an extra smile to the person who serves you in the staff canteen. When you download that mod that just tweaks some little detail, be sure to leave feedback about how much it’s improved your game experience. When you see that little art blog post that makes you smile, pop a note in that it made you chuckle. When you watch that struggling indie band that nobody seems to give a crap about, email the singer and tell them: just because you’re not number one, don’t ever think that you are second best.

  1. Great piece here via collapseboard “We are the swan’s feet” really liked that quote. The thought of giving up usually occurs a few times a day, but ya gotta just kick it in the head and keep on truckin!

  2. I love you. I think that you are the world’s most beautiful woman. I know that many a man thinks the same way, but despite everything, I feel this way and I want that you know i
