Joseph Mulhollen – Garbage

Don’t hate him just because he looks like a hipster: this is actually pretty good stuff. Good enough for me to wilfully ignore that it’s a Tuesday and I don’t normally post a one-song-link on a Tuesday, but this warrants your attention.

My friend Shannon posted this on Facebook because apparently he knows one of the people in question (presumably either Joseph Mulhollen or director William Holloway), so I idly clicked on the link and was impressed. It’s basically latter-day Sufjan Stevens without the string section. This is a good thing. (Well, the Sufjan Stevens thing. String sections are always welcome.)

The percussion is really unexpected – I’d even call it “industrial” in the old-fashioned sense. It’s got that clattering metallic edge that sits incongruously with those warm dissonant synths. It’s not easy to classify, but could bound cheerfully into a room with Sufjan’s Age of Adz and be accepted as part of that crowd. Either way, it’s made my ears happy for today.
