The word “awesome” is overused, but I think this is merited. A truly cool idea. I think the marketing department can pat themselves on the back now, while the rest of us are playing Choose Your Own Adventure.
Dishonored, developed by the studio behind Arx Fatalis and designers who worked on Deus Ex and Half Life 2, is released 9-12 October. The game is broadly a stealth action adventure, in an industrial city in the 17th century. It has a kind of Thief-ish vibe, from the footage I’ve seen, though the designers rejected a shadow-based mechanic because they figured it wasn’t realistic to remain unseen when someone is standing directly in front of you. (Happens to me all the time in Skyrim, but I tell myself that they can’t see me because I am just that awesome at hiding.) Instead, it’s all about remaining out of your enemy’s line-of-sight, so hiding behind the sofa will do it.
There are elements of magic in the game, but – like Thief – it’s the sort of game where you can use combat but the emphasis is on stealth, and you can even complete the game without killing anyone. It’s very much focussed on player choice, which should appeal to fans of RPGs (and most games, frankly) – though it’s a mission-based rather than open-world game. Other RPG elements include character upgrades and non-linear choice-and-consequences, so this should definitely jump out at fans of hybrid games like Vampire TMB.
The voice cast includes Susan Sarandon, Chloe Grace Moretz, Brad Dourif and Carrie Fisher. The game was nominated for Best of Show at E3 and has been picking up awards galore on the expo circuit, so it’s one game I’m looking forward to. Especially on the strength of this:
